In chapter 2 when Henry is with his regiment the book starts to call Henry "the youth" which sort of makes sense since Henry is the newest guy in the regiment or the "young blood" or "fresh meat" by the soldier standards. The youths new regiment is sent to a river where everyone is suspecting to see some action but there intelligence was off and the enemy never showed then they find out that their (Union) forces drove them away before they (Confederate) got to the youth's regiment, which since the regiment is a new regiment the Confederate forces would have probably been defeated and the regiment gone since there was not many veterans in the regiment. Also the youth meets someone the book calls "the loud soldier" and the youth becomes friends with him ,but it's allways good to have friends in a war zone but it hurts alot more if he dies in front of you.
